Excerpt from “Favorite Beach Photos” – By Ken Buckner: “Consistently my most popular nature photo year after year, this image was made on the west end of Ocean Isle Beach, N. C. The inviting path to the sea, lined with sea oats and soft dunes reminds the viewer of a pleasant excellence they’ve had or would like to have. I didn’t know at the time that storms (especially hurricanes) can alter barrier islands drastically. They can move or eliminate all the things that are captured in this serene view and that is exactly what happened here. “Dunes Path” became the first photo to make me realize the value of recording transitory beauty. I was fortunate to find this spot and record it for all to enjoy, I loved the golden sea oats, blue shadows, pink sand and the tiny bird tracks going up the small dune in the forground, I built the design around the cactus shapes and still enjoy the sense of depth in the picture from the closest sand grains to the ocean’s distant horizon fine. The photograph portrays a moment of beauty that was and may again be seen in similar form along the ocean’s ever changing shore.”

Excerpt from “Favorite Beach Photos” – By Ken Buckner: “Holden Beach, North Carolina is home to some of the largest Ghost Crabs that I’ve ever seen. Late one afternoon this creature and I seemed to be the only visitors on an east end beach and we spent about two hours together. I noticed that the crab was not only unafraid of me, he (or she) turned to face me as I moved around it in fascination, It occurred to me that I could control the light of the setting sun on the crab without touching it by simply changing my position. Thinking that an eye level approach might be interesting, I got down on my stomach in the sand and used a short telephoto lens to take a really good took. The crab seemed as interested in me as I was in it, perhaps seeing its own reflection in the lens. An encounter like this with what seems an alien visitor with its pod eyes above its head is one of the reasons I enjoy nature so much. The golden light of sunset became everything a photographer could hope for. The photograph provides a look at a creature that is normally shy and reminds me of the communication we had and the sunset we shared that special afternoon at the beach.”

Iron Man 3 in Wilmington

Iron Man 3 will soon begin filming in Wilmington NC! Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle may soon be spotted around the Wilmington area in upcoming months. The action-flick should put about $80 million into the local economy.
The Wilmington Regional Film Commission has been busy keeping it’s eye on 10 productions of different sizes for the year, and this time it landed a BIG one. With the General Assembly’s approval in 2009 of increased incentives, the regional film commission is seeing more activity, and “Iron Man 3″ could signal producers of other big-budget films that this is the place to be. It looks like Hollywood East is a title Wilmington is glad to keep.

Wrightsville Beach Biathlon
The Wrightsville Beach Biathlon was the first biathlon held anywhere that replaces swimming with the growing sport of paddleboarding. Also unique to the event, the run portion will take place totally on the oceanfront sand. This hard sand 4-mile course will present a different challenge than the typical paved road race.

32nd Annual NC Jazz Fest
This is one of the largest traditional jazz festivals in the Southeast and a STS Top 20 Event.
We will open Thursday night featuring 3 hours of different styles of jazz. Friday and Saturday nights we will return to our 7 sets of traditional jazz with a different leader for each set.
Our all-star musicians are all world renowned and include guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, Dion Tucker on trombone, vocalist Nicki Parrott, John Royen, a powerful pianist from New Orleans.
Wilmington gives a warm welcome to all of the jazz lovers attending our thirty-second annual North Carolina Jazz Festival!
This historic city located on the bank of the Cape Fear River has many interesting shops, art galleries, museums and restaurants, as well as a movie studio, nearby beaches, plus Revolutionary and Civil War sites to explore during your days here.
We will fill your evenings with exciting performances by some of the greatest traditional jazz musicians from around the globe!
Thursday Night Showcase
This year’s opening night event, featuring different styles of jazz, will showcase local piano-man Grenoldo Frazier, then the “beauty & the bass” duo of Melva Houston and Herman Burney. After a brief intermission, we will present two sets of rousing classic jazz with nine of our world class All-Stars, to complete the three hour concert.
The All-Stars performing opening night will be Harry Allen, Herman Burney, John Cocuzzi, Adrian Cunningham, Kevin Dorn, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ed Polcer, Bria Skonberg and Dion Tucker. Click on their photos to learn more about them and their music!
Friday and Saturday Nights
On these evenings we will feature our All-Star musicians in seven sets each night, and each set with a different leader, playing their versions of classic jazz tunes. Concerts start at 7:30 and go until midnight! Cash bar available in the concourse.
Our musicians – this year we will have two vibes players – John Cocuzzi and Chuck Redd. Chuck will also play drums and John will play piano and do some vocals. We have some of the best, most versatile musicians playing today! Bucky Pizzarelli will be back as our senior jazz anchor with his wonderful guitar renditions. On the horns we will have another of our anchors, Ed Polcer, direct from commutes between New York City and New Orleans, plus the talented, vivacious young lady from British Columbia, Bria Skonberg, who also sings. Newcomer to NCJF this year will be Dion Tucker on trombone – Dion plays with Harry Connick Jr.’s band, as well as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. We welcome back tenor saxophonist Harry Allen and Australian jazzman, Adrian Cunningham, who was new to NCJF in 2010, and plays clarinet, alto & tenor sax, and flute. The rhythm section is covered by drummers Kevin Dorn and Chuck Redd, bassists Herman Burney and another Aussie import Nicki Parrott (Nicki will also give us some of her entertaining vocal renditions)! Other newcomers to NCJF this year are John Royen, a powerful stride pianist from New Orleans, and Patrick Harison, a talented young jazz accordianist from Minneapolis, Minn.
