Cape Fear coffee lovers should mark their calendars now for Wilmington Coffee Fest on February 1, 2020. The Wilmington Coffee Fest will be held at the Hannah Block Historic USO Community Center and Waterline Brewing Company. In addition to highlighting the artisan coffee culture in the region, Wilmington Coffee Fest will educate locals on coffee and related topics and also give back to the community.

February’s Wilmington Coffee Fest will be the third annual coffee event presented by Wilmington Coffee Crawl, LLC. Founders Krysta Kearney and Will Chacon, who each operate coffee shops in downtown Wilmington, were inspired to create an event that would bring local coffee lovers together and introduce the broader community to Wilmington’s coffee scene. After sold-out events in 2018 and 2019, the Wilmington Coffee Crawl is evolving into the Wilmington Coffee Fest to broaden the scope of the event and allow the entire Wilmington coffee community to participate.

Though the Wilmington Coffee Fest is certainly coffee-centric, there will be something for everyone, non-coffee-drinkers included. With 70-80 vendors participating, anyone who likes fine tea, sweet treats, baked goods, local art, craft beer, or great music will find something to enjoy. Events will include demonstrations, lectures, kid-friendly activities, and – of course – tastings!

As a community-oriented event, Wilmington Coffee Fest will be an environmentally and socially sustainable festival. Composting will be available on site, and participants are encouraged to minimize waste as much as possible. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the preservation of the Hannah Block Center and the Plastic Ocean Project, a Wilmington-based non-profit leveraging both research and art to clean plastic out of our oceans.

The 15th Annual Johnnie Mercers Pier Dogfish Tournament in Wrightsville Beach, NC, attracts hundreds of fisherpeople and offers cash prizes. Join us on January 25th for a grat day of fishing on the pier! 

Tournament Rules

• The tournament is from 1pm to 8pm. If no fish are caught there will be a 30-minute overtime period where the first fish decked is the winner, 2nd fish decked is second place and 3rd fish decked is third place (regardless of size).

• If no dogfish are caught any other fish caught can be entered. Example: if 3 Blowfish are caught and no dogfish they will be declared the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winner based on the tournament rules as specified in this correspondence.

• The maximum length fishing rod allowed in the tournament is TEN foot.

• Over hand casting only, no side to side casting.

• There is an $8.00 per/rod cost paid to Johnny Mercers Pier.

• There is a $5.00 tournament entry fee per/rod cost that will be paid out to the biggest 3 fish at 50/30/20 percent.

• You can only fish one rod at a time. You may enter more than one rod in the tournament to switch rods, but you can only fish one rod at a time.

• You will be issued one PIN regardless of how many rods you enter into the tournament. That PIN must be transferred to the rod you are fishing.

• No saving of spaces for anglers/people that aren’t present. First come first serve basis.

• The angler has to be on the pier and in control of their rod for a fish to be counted in the tournament.

• The angler can only have one winning fish. Example: if you catch the 3 largest fish only the biggest will count.

• If there is a tie, whoever weighed the first fish get the top spot.

• In the event of no fish being caught the money will be paid out by raffle of all the anglers that remain until the end of the tournament.

• Keep chairs, coolers, pier carts, etc…… away from the rails of the pier.

• All other prizes will be raffled to the remaining anglers upon the tournament ending.

• No outside alcohol is to be brought onto the pier as per NC State Law. Coolers, backpacks, tackle boxes, etc…. will be checked. Violation of this State Law will result in a dismissal from the tournament and pier.

The 7th annual Beethoven 15K & 5K race courses travel through picturesque areas on paved running trails, over small wooden bridges and through a nature area on a 1/3 mile long elevated boardwalk. All participants get a long sleeved running shirt: 15K, 5K and Doggy Dashers too. The 15K finisher medal  features the mean Beethoven logo and looks great! There are inside bathrooms pre and post race. The after party and awards ceremony takes place inside the fitness center and features good snacks, adult beverages, sports drinks and water for recovery, prize drawings and running Beethoven themed awards. 

Test yourself on January 12th and run with mean Beethoven in the 15K, the perfect middle distance race, or try the fun and fast 5K. Beethoven’s Doggy Dash 1-mile is a fun run or walk that your best 4-legged friend will love. The Dash is an un-timed event that starts 25 minutes before the 15K & 5K so everyone gets to see the Dash start and finish. 

The post race party takes place inside the Brunswick Forest Fitness Center with adult beverages and good recovery food. During the awards we’ll have prize drawings for gift certificates from our awesome sponsors and free race entries to some of our other 2019 races.
