The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is hosting the third annual 5K Race for the Planet on Sunday, April 17, 2011. Race time is 8:00 am with packet pick-up and on-site registration beginning at 7:00 am.

Scenic Fort Fisher will be your route as this race starts and ends at the Aquarium. This flat, mostly asphalt course is scenic with views of the ocean, maritime forest, and historic Fort Fisher Civil War site.

The first 300 pre-registered runners are guaranteed an organic cotton t-shirt. Afterward, enjoy the after party with live music by The Casserole, refreshments, race results and prizes

This Friday, April 8^th 2011 through Sunday, April 10th come and enjoy the 58th Annual Azalea Garden Tour and its “Picture Perfect Gardens.”

Enjoy Southern hospitality amid the glorious color of azaleas and other spring flowers. The Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour opens Friday with the colorful Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Queen’s Garden Party at Greenfield Lake. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony opening the 12-garden tour features Summerall Guards, the Citadel’s elite senior drill team, escorting 125 Azalea Belles dressed in authentic antebellum gowns. The Belles will also be in each garden on the tour. Local and national celebrities are also present to celebrate the event.

Cape Fear Garden Club members will serve refreshments and hundreds of homemade cookies.  The UNCW Brass Ensemble will present musical entertainment from the gazebo at the Wheel’s center.  All Wilmington Rotary Clubs have worked tirelessly beautifying the Rotary Wheel area for this event and for the community. Gardens are open 10 am to 6 pm daily.

The tour has been featured in SOUTHERN LIVING and is one of the longest running and most popular garden tours in the South.

The 2nd Annual Azalea Cape Fear Volunteer Center/Big Buddy 5K/10K/Fun Walk is happening Saturday April 2, 2011. The races starts at 8am, with day-of registration from 6:30am-7:30am. The event takes place at Mayfaire Town Center located at 925 Town Center Drive.

The entry fee is $30/advance or $35/race day. Youth participants under 12 are free to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The course is certified by Try Sports and will be professionally timed by Atlantic Coast Timing.  Prizes will be awarded to 1st place Overall Male and Female- $100 cash 2nd place Overall Male and Female-$100 gift card 3rd place Overall Male and Female- $50 gift card. Recognition for winners of ALL age group *prizes dependent on number of entries

All proceeds from the Fun Walk will benefit the Big Buddy Program. Big Buddy is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches “at-risk” youth ages 6-16 in New Hanover County and Brunswick County with positive adult role models.

The Blockade Runner Beach Resort will be hosting the Second Annual Wrightsville Beach Biathlon. The biathlon features some added challenges replacing the swimming category with paddleboarding and the 4-mile run will take place on hard packed sand.

The race will start rain or shine at 10 am Saturday, March 26^th 2011. The Blockade Runner will offer a special race rate, which will include a paddleboard rental. This will be a spectacular event; don’t miss this unique race experience!

The winners will receive complimentary weekends at the Blockade Runner along with over $1000 in prizes donated by Coastal Urge. The patio awards ceremony immediately follows the race and includes burgers and beers for the athletes and their families.
